Welding Machine Cake

I was asked by a friend to help her create a cake for her husband's birthday . . . he's in the trades and does a bit of welding so we decided to make a welding machine birthday cake.  It was (lovingly) scratch-baked by Irene!  It's two 9x13 vanilla cakes, stacked, filled and iced with vanilla buttercream frosting.  Each cake was trimmed and cut in half before stacking.  And after they were stacked, we trimmed the angled edge off the front of the cake.  Iced the trimmed portion and covered in tinted and rolled fondant.

Jill (another friend) and Irene were very hands on and helped to make this cake come to life.  I particularly like the dials tuned to "33" (his age!) and the metallic looking birthday sign (nice painting Irene) . . . I hope it went over well!
