These totally awesome "homemade" donuts are so easy to make, it's dangerous! It's not an original idea - the internet has an abundance of "recipes" for these donuts. Even Paula Deen has them published on the Food Network website! The instructions are no-fuss...but read first before making!
You can choose to use either the regular size Pillsbury Biscuits (any variety should work), I used "Country Biscuits" . . . this will yield 10 decent donuts (think bigger than a "mini-donut" but much smaller than a Top Pot donut)! If you want to achieve a large-and-in-charge sized donut, use the Grands varierty of biscuit! Each tube of Grands will yield 5 large donuts. Don't forget, you will also get the same number of donut-holes from each tube!
Heat a frying pan with at least a 1/2" of canola or peanut oil (the more the merrier?) on medium heat and bring it to 350 degrees F (use a candy thermometer to achieve this ideal temperature, it's worth the investment). Open your chosen tube of biscuit, separate each biscuit and punch out a donut hole with a small cutter. When the oil is at temperature, drop in your donuts a batch at a time (depends on how big your pan is) . . . . try and maintain a constant 350 degrees so as not to burn the donuts before the insides are cooked all the way through (doughy is not delicious) about 2-3 minutes a side for the regular size, 4-5 minutes for larger ones, until they are a deep golden brown.
Place the cooked donuts onto a papertowel-lined plate, and have a cooling rack standing by! You'll need to glaze/sugar these puppies while they are hot!
You can choose to either roll them in icing/confectioner's sugar or a combination of cinnamon sugar (1 TBSN of cinnamon to 1/4 cup of granulated sugar) OR you can glaze them:
Vanilla Glaze:
1 cup of icing/confectioner's sugar
1-2 TBSN milk
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
Maple Glaze:
1 cup of icing/confectioner's sugar
1-2 TBSN pure maple syrup
Chocolate Glaze:
1 cup of icing/confectioner's sugar
1-2 TBSN milk
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
2 TBSN cocoa powder
Maple/Bacon Variety (it's sooo good):
Glaze with Maple Glaze and top with crumbled bacon while still wet!
After you glaze/sugar the donuts place on a cooling rack... gobble up while warm! Make tons if you have friends over - these won't last long. Make tons if you don't have friends and want some. They will love you.
