Happy 60th Birthday Mr.Shopaholic!

It was a pleasure to make this cake for someone who shares my passion for shopping and hunting for the perfect deal! He was celebrating his 60th birthday, so to commemorate this occasion, it seemed fitting to make him a shopping bag, surrounded by his favorite labels and bling.

I started by baking two 9x13 rich chocolate fudge cakes laced with mini-chocolate chips :-) I then made a large batch of chocolate fudge frosting (think ganache). I cut the 9x13 cakes into 4" slabs and split them all, then stacked them with ganache onto the cake board. Covered the tower in vanilla buttercream and inserted six (of my favorite) large straws to support the structure (bubble tea straws). The whole thing was wrapped with brown tinted fondant (4 separate pieces) and refrigerated to firm up.

Then comes the fun. The decorating of the cake part was easy - - - loosely placed gumpaste for tissue, gumpaste handles, and chocolate Fondariffic letters! The fun came with the loose details, such as the Birthday Boy's gold watch, big diamond ring, gold link bracelet, and price tags and other brand name tags, and the Harley belt buckle. Thanks to my sister for making the Starbucks cup (out of fondant wrapped Rice Krispy treats and buttercream) and credit card birthday card, as well as some of the tags ;-)
