Hockey Rink Cake

I made a cake for a friend's son by request this week. He's turning the big One-Oh. 10!! Double digits territory. So, to celebrate a big deal birthday, I made him a big deal cake!!

My friend's son is a sporty guy, and a superstar little hockey player! She asked for something with his hockey team logo, so I thought....why not a hockey rink with the team logo on centre ice? And why not add a little fondant mini-me complete with team jersey and socks to boot to top it off?

It's a dark chocolate cake filled with chocolate frosting laced with mini chocolate chips (see recipe section for both recipes). I hear he likes chocolate :).

I baked the recipe a little differently this time because I'm not a fan of splitting 9x13 cakes, and I knew I needed to fill this cake. Splitting the cake is usually messy and stressful. Instead, I divided the batter evenly between two parchment lined 9x13 pans and baked for half the time (approx. 19 minutes). Perfect!

I frosted the bottom layer, sprinkled generously with mini chocolate chips, topped with the top layer and skim frosted the whole thing in the same chocolate frosting. Put in the fridge to firm up while I prepared the fondant.

It was pretty simple for decorating. The hardest part was ensuring I had straight lines for the ice lines. I used mostly fondant, but had to rely on my edible markers for some of the decorating.

The mini-figure is actually about 4 inches high. He was made the day before with the addition of some magical stuff called Tylose Powder (at your local cake decorating store). Added to the fondant, it speeds up the drying time to under 24 hours. Normally, a figure like that would take days to dry on its own.

I know it's not perfect...my cakes never are (and it's my first hockey cake)! The face-off circles aren't quite lined up properly. It's still a learning process, and I'm okay with it!

Hope he likes it!
